Biosense Webster software provides more precise imaging and navigation of the heart

21 May 2005

Diamond Bar, Calif, USA. Biosense Webster, Inc. has introduced the Cartomerge(TM) image integration module, which it claims is a technological breakthrough for diagnosing heart arrhythmias.

The module enables electrophysiologists to create 3-D electroanatomical maps that are registered with computed yomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. Merging the CT/MRI image with the Carto(TM) XP System 3-D map gives electrophysiologists a more precise view of the heart, allowing them to better navigate catheters to targeted points within the heart.

Dr. Hugh Calkins of John Hopkins University, said, "Combining the accuracy of Biosense Webster's catheter navigation technology with the anatomical detail of CT or MRI is a major technological advance in diagnosing complex arrhythmias."

The Cartomerge Software Module, used with the Biosense Webster Carto XP Electroanatomical Navigation System, allows physicians to accurately locate and map arrhythmias. The Cartomerge module offers electrophysiologists image registration in three steps: importing the CT or MRI image, processing the image on a radiology or Carto XP System workstation, and registering the images.

Biosense Webster President, Roy Tanaka said, "Now electro-physiologists will know that what they're seeing on the screen is an exact representation of the patient's anatomy. They'll be able to relate their catheter movements to a screen visual that helps to eliminate the guesswork."

Additional benefits of the Cartomerge image integration module include full DICOM 3 compatibility, minimal point acquisition for effective development of treatment strategy, new tools for procedure planning and targeting, and improved speed of the system.
