Elekta receives Australian orders for Synergy image-guided radiation therapy

28 April 2006

Stockholm, Sweden. Elekta has announced two new orders for its image guided radiation therapy treatment product, Elekta Synergy, from North Coast Area Health Service in New South Wales, Australia. These orders together with recent orders from Austin Health Hospital in Heidelberg, Victoria and Townsville Hospital, Queensland, represent a total order value in excess of A$10 million.

Elekta is a major supplier of products for advanced radiation therapy, comprehensive cancer management and non-invasive treatment of brain disorders. The company says that concept of image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and its 3D X-ray volume imaging is rapidly gaining clinical acceptance worldwide.

The most recent Australian orders for Elekta's pioneering IGRT technology come from clinics located in Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie in New South Wales, both part of the North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS). These new customers also invested in oncology information management systems from its subsidiary, IMPAC Medical Systems, including MOSAIQ, an electronic medical record (EMR) system for oncology clinics.

In March, the company also received orders for advanced digital linear accelerators from Austin Health Hospital in Heidelberg, Victoria, also equipped with IGRT technology and the MOSAIQ EMR system, and from Townsville Hospital in Queensland. These systems are already delivered.

"We chose Elekta since 3D X-ray Volume Imaging on Elekta Synergy is now very well established and has been proven clinically at so many sites throughout the world", says Mr. Dominic Au-Yeung, Manager of Radiation Oncology at Austin Health Hospital, and continues; "at Austin, we are looking forward to the new systems being installed in June this year".

Elekta have recently also installed IMPAC's electronic medical record system at Radiation Oncology Victoria (ROV) in Melbourne, which is now successfully up and running in all four of their current centres and installed at the soon to be opened fifth centre, all integrating the operations and treatment process on linear accelerators from different suppliers.

"We are very pleased with the recent development in Australia where Elekta now holds a strong position. We can offer a comprehensive solution in the fight against cancer from the most innovative digital linear accelerator on the market to the best software solution for oncology information management, a combination very well adapted to today's customer demand", summarizes Brendan J. Vahey, Managing Director and head of Elekta's Business Unit Australia.
