Continua Health Alliance
5 November 2008
Nonin Medical, Inc. successfully demonstrated the first Continua
pre-certified pulse oximeter at the 5th Annual Connected Health
Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts. By meeting Continua's comprehensive
Version One guidelines, Nonin Medical's innovative pulse oximeters,
along with products from over 170 companies worldwide, will enable a
simple 'plug and play' integration, resulting in streamlined
communications to help consumers and healthcare providers better manage
personal health and wellness.
Nonin Medical collaborated with other leading companies in recent
months to successfully complete the international connectivity standard
for the interoperability of pulse oximeters, ISO/IEEE 11073-10404. "This
is a significant step toward eliminating proprietary interfaces,
allowing pulse oximetry equipment to communicate freely with other
devices," says Kurt Kermes, Standards Architect at Nonin Medical. "It
will serve as a great benefit to all areas of healthcare."
Envisioning the shift of healthcare, Nonin Medical has implemented
technologies throughout its product offering to ensure adherence to
these new open standards. "Nonin has made its vision of streamlined
interoperable solutions and information exchange a reality by playing an
integral role in the development of new open standards," says Jayant
Parthasarathy, PhD, Technology Program Manager for Nonin Medical and
Vice Chair of Continua's Technical Working Group. "These cross industry
efforts in Continua, Bluetooth, USB and IEEE will enable
interoperability among medical and consumer devices and ultimately
empower individuals to better manage their health.
