UK healthcare technology companies urged to tap into growing Middle
East markets
23 January 2009
UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the Association of British
Healthcare Industries (ABHI) are urging UK healthcare technology
businesses to capitalise on demand in the fast growing Middle East
market, which is expected to be worth $60bn by 2025.
A combination of a growing population and improving standards of
living are creating heightened expectations of the standard of care.
This in turn is driving investment in hospitals and medical facilities,
and pushing up demand for state-of–the art drugs and therapies.
To help British companies to tap into these opportunities, UKTI and
the ABHI are supporting more than 120 British companies, which will be
showcasing innovative products at Arab Health from January 26-29th this
year. In addition to funding through UKTI’s Trade Show Access Programme
(TAP), these companies will have the opportunity to meet more than 15
buyers from around the Middle East.
Businesses on the UK pavilion will be offering Middle East healthcare
providers the opportunity to view the latest, cutting-edge medical
equipment, which can help to foster excellence in the Gulf’s
fast-developing healthcare systems.
Sir Andrew Cahn, Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment, said:
“With a fast growing population and rapid investment into healthcare
services, the Middle East needs access to innovative medical
technologies which will support the development of world-class
healthcare systems. The UK’s deep heritage of scientific excellence,
innovation, talent and skills mean that British companies are well
placed to meet this demand.
“Arab Health is a fantastic opportunity for the UK to showcase some
of the most exciting developments in healthcare. With the backing of UK
Trade & Investment and ABHI I believe businesses attending this year’s
event will be able to forge strong and productive relationships with
organisations in the Middle East market.”
ABHI’s Chief Executive, Peter Ellingworth, said: “ABHI is taking a
record number of UK companies to Arab Health in January 2009 proving the
growing importance of this key exhibition. The UK is greatly respected
for its quality and innovation around the world, especially in the
Middle East. With a strong, well-branded UK pavilion, supporting
seminars and receptions, many UK companies are achieving great success
and gaining lucrative business from this key event. Arab Health remains,
without doubt, the leading healthcare tradeshow for the Middle East, and
one that increasingly cannot be missed.”
With a highly skilled manufacturing base, together with outstanding
research and development facilities, UK companies are at the forefront
of providing innovative products and services for hospitals, doctors’
surgeries, laboratories and diagnostics, and for home care. Companies
range from those providing bougies and tuning forks through to advanced
electrotherapy products and other medical, scientific and industrial
products and services.
Some of the innovative UK companies attending Arab Health include:
Summit Medical Ltd. manufactures single-use medical devices for
hospitals in the UK, and for export around the world. Its main products
include HiVac, a bone cement used by orthopaedists in joint replacement
surgery, and CellTrans, a system which collects and reinfuses shed blood
following hip or knee surgery.
With the support of UKTI, Summit Medical has just despatched its
first order, worth in excess of US$20,000, to the Middle East, for
orthopaedic bone cement mixing systems. The innovative product, which is
used by surgeons in theatre, is destined for the University Hospital in
Dammam. Summit Medical operates in Saudi Arabia through an exclusive
distributor, Al Mofadaly Est, which has offices in Riyadh, Jeddah and
Dammam.
An excellent example of eldercare products is the new addition to
Malem Medical’s product range, which takes the form of a pressure /
de-pressure (ie sit-down / getting up) mat that can be attached to any
Malem Medical alarm. This is of particular interest to nursing homes and
the geriatric population generally, as well as patients suffering from
Alzheimers. It allows carers to know if the person under supervision is
getting up or moving into dangerous areas, for example with steps or
stairs. Malem’s products are in line with the UK’s emphasis on
encouraging treatment at one’s own home, either by oneself or by one’s
carer.
Oxfordshire-based Owen Mumford is a specialist manufacturer of small
medical devices including innovative blood sampling products for home,
as well as clinical use. Its advanced automatic injection devices and
pen needles are designed for maximum comfort. They are designed to help
patients to self-manage conditions such as diabetes at home, as well as
facilitating diagnosis and treatment in hospitals and GP surgeries by
healthcare professionals.
Products being exhibited in the diagnostic sphere include Kimal’s
Angioflow diagnostic catheters and Maltron’s pioneering Electrical
Impedance tomography imaging system, which, used bed-side in the
assessment of lung disease, is the world’s first non-invasive product of
its type.
Another Oxfordshire-based company, Penlon, will be launching its
latest Anasthesia Ventilator at Arab Health. This hosts a number of
exciting new features including electronic PEEP in all modes, a large
12.1" colour display, and an integrated electronic flow meter for the
anaesthesia system, plus sophisticated advanced patient support modes.
