Europe’s biggest blood pressure conference in London April 26-29

25 April 2012

Europe’s largest hypertension conference, the 22nd Scientific Meeting of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) will take place in London, UK, from April 26 to 29, 2012.

Around 5000 delegates are expected to attend. A major portion of the program will concentrate on original research, and updates on current topics. The meeting will take place at the ICC, Excel, London, in the heart of London’s Royal Docks.

Hypertension — high blood pressure — is the most important preventable risk factor for premature death worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, hypertension ranks above even tobacco use as a risk factor for preventable death. It is estimated that 25% of the world’s adult population — around 1.25 billion people — will suffer from hypertension by 2025.

It is a major risk factor for stroke, heart attacks, aneurysms, and other conditions. Nearly 13% of all global deaths (7.5 million per year) are attributable to hypertension. In the UK, around 16 million adults (30% of the UK adult population) suffer from hypertension, leading to more than UK 62,000 deaths per year.
